Description

Backingtothefuture is a Canadian-based poster restoration, preservation and shrink wrap framing business.

The restoration and preservation process is called linen backing. Linen backing is a commonly accepted, highly skilled and artistic form of preservation and restoration of original vintage movie posters, especially those that were shipped to the theatres folded. It is also a way to preserve a variety of other paper posters including travel posters, war bond posters, sports posters and concert posters.

Shrink wrap framing is not only cost effective, but it ensures the posters remain flat and protected against dirt and smudges. The finished product is a light, durable framed poster that presents very well. By shrink wrapping a poster the value and integrity of is always preserved. (Due to the cost of shipping a shrink wrapped poster, this service is primarily for client in the Greater Toronto Area).

The principal of the company is Dan Miles, a vintage movie poster collector and movie buff. Dan has been restoring posters for 19 years now. He learned this trade by studying under the guidance of a master printer and paper restorer in Toronto and a professional shrink wrapper in Toronto.

Mission Statement:

Through this highly specialized artistic process we will ensure that a poster, whether it has sentimental value or is a valuable collectable, is properly preserved and prepared to display for years of enjoyment.

In my experience, Dan at Backing to the Future did an absolute horrible job on one of my rare pieces. I kind of blame myself tho a little because I should’ve done more research when choosing a restorer instead of picking the first one I saw which was Dan. At first, I thought everything would come out great when looking at his website he had good reviews and his portfolio of his past poster he had done looked really nice. My poster was already in “very good to fine” condition but I just wanted a “light” restore/retouch on the poster plus the linen back. It took Dan about two months to restore everything!! plus an additional two weeks just to send me back the poster. His communication is extremely horrible! I would message him and it would take a couple of days for him just to respond (which really pissed me off a lot ). Finally, at last I receive the poster! and let me tell you I was so excited to see the results! right when I got down unpacking everything I look at the poster and my gosh…. it was so bad I really wanted to cry. The work that was down to the poster was a half a** job! the colors didn’t even match at all which really mad me angry! Also his team didn’t even take the time to do a little bit of research before working on the poster so they colored over parts that were suppose to be designs that were around the poster. Not only that, the linen back job was terrible! it was all bent and creased up like what the hell. He didn’t take care of my poster not one bit which was so unprofessional coming from a company who restores expensive art work. I’ll never use this company to ever restore any of my posters ever again.

I had a completely different experience from the previous rater. I just got my two posters back from Dan. Outstanding job. The restoration was spotless and the packaging could have survived WW2.
Dan was always responsive and professional. Prices, comparing to US, are very competitive. Will use again

I had a couple Elvis posters linen backed by Backing to the Future and Dan and his team did an amazing job restoring both. One had a hole in it that was fixed and you almost can’t see it unless you hold it up to a black light. The other had some staining on the artwork area of the poster and they were able to remove that as well. It’s difficult to impossible to tell that either on of the posters were ever folded. They both looked amazing and were extremely well packed and returned to me in more than secure condition. As for how long it took, well, let’s just say, COVID pandemic and my country had Trump for a president for four years, so we were all fighting an uphill battle on that. I understand great work takes time and I would rather not have that work rushed in any way. Dan and Backing to the Future was an excellent choice for me and made those posters look fantastic! I have a substantial poster collection and will be using them again many more times.
